We would like to invite all to the Conference by Women in Philosophy 2019, taking place June 24 at Rijksuniversiteit Groningen.
The goal of the conference is to provide a platform for undergraduate and graduate women philosophers to present their work to their peers. In this way we hope to create an opportunity for young women philosophers to inspire and motivate one another and to forge potentially productive alliances. We have a great number of women philosophers present papers on a wide variety of topics. The program, where all talks are listed, can be found here.
Keynote by prof. dr. Heather Widdows
We are honored to welcome professor Heather Widdows as our keynote speaker. Heather Widdows is a leading international researcher across applied ethics. In 2005 she was awarded a visiting fellowship at Harvard University, where she worked on issues of moral neo-colonialism. She has led a number of funded projects on issues of property in the body; reproductive rights; human tissue; war on terror; and ownership and governance of the genome. Heather’s current research explores the moral philosophy of beauty. In May 2018 she published her latest book ‘Perfect Me: Beauty as an Ethical Ideal’.
Symposia with experienced women philosophers from NL & BE universities
Participants can really benefit from the presence of experienced women in academic philosophy working at universities in The Netherlands and Belgium. We therefore organise two parallel symposia, each consisting experienced women in philosophy talking about their research topic. The symposium on ‘Feminist philosophy and Exclusion’ will be featured by dr. Charlotte Knowles (RUG) and prof. dr. Iris van der Tuin (UU). The symposium on ‘Neurodiversity’ will be featured by dr. Kristien Hens (UA), prof. dr. Trudy Dehue (RUG) and dr. Annelies Kleinherenbrink (UvT).
Pre-conference round-table discussion Sunday 23 June
On Sunday June 23 from 16.30 until 17.30 we will host an informal roundtable discussion. The discussion will be more broadly about the role of women in philosophy and being a woman in philosophy. We hope the discussion will give you the opportunity to connect with other women philosophers in an informal setting and to exchange experiences as well as tips and advice. There is the opportunity to have a drink together afterwards.
